Chapter Five

We had been running together nearly nonstop now. My legs were aching up to my waist. And the intense heat wasn’t helping matters much either. Every now and then we’d have a nasty run in with one of the D-reapers agents. I hadn’t really been too afraid up until then. I mean, I had been startled when the digimon gods appeared. I had been scared of the D-reaper in my dream. But I never feared Dobermon. He was my friend.

I almost wish... But no. He will be leaving me soon. I shouldn’t to attached.

I, we, I am so used to being alone it’s hard to think I’d ever have someone to be with me. We had seen the agents.

We have looked into the face of fear.

We have seen eyes that search and scan.

We have seen creatures that shoot to destroy.

We have seen chaos.

And it scared me.

“Why did you say “Don’t”, Alice?”

I was confused. “What do you mean?”

“When we first left together, you told me not to have faith in a humans promises. Why did you say that?”

“Because,” I told him. “A human can make a promise, a very big promise. A promise that makes another person feel safe and happy, like nothing can every hurt you...”

*Flashback*

“Don’t worry Alice.”

The beautiful blonde haired woman stroked her daughters cheek comfortingly from were she lay in the hospital bed. “We’ll always been together.”

The tiny girl could have been a doll made in the likeness of this woman. She was small featured with the same whitey-blonde hair and dried tears on her face. Dried by the hands of her mother.

“We are a family, and that means...”

“No one alone!” The child finished for her.

The little girl left the dark hospital room feeling soothed. Everything was going to be alright now, she was certain of that.

“Don’t worry Daddy.” She told her stressed looking father one she met him outside. “Mommy said everything is going to be okay! We’re a family, we’ll never be alone.”

The orange haired man kneeled down and took the childs bony shoulders in his large hands. “Alice honey.” He squeezed her so hard it almost hurt. “I don’t think Mommy is right this time...”

“What do you mean Daddy?”

*End Flashback*

I didn’t know what he meant then. I sure know now.

“A human can make a promise. And break it a day later. When you walk into that cold dark room, and see them lying on a bed. So cold. Not moving. Not speaking. Not anything. They can’t... Even...” I broke off.

“Can’t even say goodbye?” Dobermon tried to finish for me.

I nodded. “And then the only other one who you loved, sinks away into the sadness. Leaving you alone with the shadows.

*Flashback*

The girl stood beside a grave. Clad in a simple back dress she did as told and threw a white rose onto the soggy earth, it was moldy and wet from being in her rain soaked hands for so long.

“Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.”

The child reached out for her fathers hand. But he was gone. They were all gone. She was all alone. In the dark rain of tears. All alone in the dark. In that comforting black morning dress. All alone...

*End Flashback*

“Do you really feel that way? That you should be lonely all your life?” Dobermon asked me. I never got a chance to reply.

More of the agents had showed up. And they were blasting us, hard.

“No! Dobermon!” I cried as a red bullet shot hit him in the leg. With some effort he stumbled to his feet. Flinging his thick neck around, trying to rid himself of the shooting pests.

More agents came they surrounded us. They cocked there guns and fists. Ready to fire.

I pressed myself against the cold white cement of the overpass on which we now stood.

I’m coming Mommy...
